Nigerian midfielder helps Brugge claim sweet revenge and another trophy in fascinating final showdown.
Super Eagles midfielder Raphael Onyedika played a pivotal role on Sunday night as Club Brugge secured their 18th Belgian Super Cup title with a hard-fought 2-1 comeback win over Union Saint-Gilloise.
The thrilling encounter, held at a packed stadium, served as the perfect stage for Brugge to avenge last year’s painful 2-1 defeat to the same opponent in the same competition.
Although Union SG struck first in the 15th minute through Franjo Ivanovic, who calmly slotted home after being set up brilliantly by a teammate, Brugge remained composed and determined.
Despite the early setback, Brugge didn’t take long to settle into the rhythm of the game. Their persistence paid off just past the half-hour mark when Greek forward Christos Tzolis converted from the spot to equalise. That equaliser seemed to ignite the Belgian giants, who pushed forward with greater intent as the half neared its end.

Onyedika claims first Belgian Super Cup medal
Club Brugge completed the turnaround in first-half stoppage time, as captain Hans Vanaken found the net with a composed finish, giving his side a 2-1 advantage heading into the break. That goal would eventually prove to be the winner, despite both teams having chances in a more cautious second half.
Onyedika, who featured for the entire 90 minutes, was solid in midfield. He broke up plays, distributed intelligently, and helped control the tempo.
This latest triumph marks the 24-year-old’s maiden Belgian Super Cup title and his second major trophy since joining the club from FC Midtjylland in August 2022. Notably, he also lifted the Belgian Pro League title with Brugge during the 2023/2024 season.
While Onyedika continues to shine at club level, his national team journey also remains noteworthy. He was a key part of Nigeria’s squad at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Côte d’Ivoire. The Super Eagles finished as runners-up during the tournament.
Moreover, he recently featured in Nigeria’s 1-1 draw against Russia in an international friendly played in Moscow.
