Nigeria’s First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, has appealed to leading Afrobeats stars, including Davido, Asake and Burna Boy, to play a greater role in supporting vulnerable Nigerians through charitable initiatives.
She made the appeal on Saturday during the launch of the National Community Food Basket programme in Lokoja, the Kogi State capital.
Drawing attention to the philanthropic activities of Senegalese-American singer Akon, the First Lady encouraged Nigerian entertainers to establish foundations and invest part of their wealth in programmes that uplift disadvantaged citizens.
According to her, the scale of poverty and hardship across the country requires collective efforts beyond what the Federal Government can handle alone.
“We have a lot of wealthy people. But our priorities are different. I want to appeal to young ones in the entertainment industry. I’ll use a music icon, Akon, who does a lot of great charity work.

“Asake, Davido, the Burna Boys of this world, and all of them. We want to see you with one foundation or the other, helping the poor with your money.
“The burden on the government is huge. Good cars are good; a Maybach and Rolls-Royce are good, but still you can help”, she stated.
