Russell Westbrook joins Sacramento Kings: NBA icon begins new chapter in his 18th season

Former MVP Russell Westbrook signs with the Sacramento Kings, adding experience and firepower to their roster for the new season.

Former NBA MVP Russell Westbrook has officially joined the Sacramento Kings, marking the start of his 18th season in the league.

The 36-year-old point guard, known for his relentless energy and explosive playmaking, joins the Kings after a productive season with the Denver Nuggets.

Westbrook averaged 13.3 points, 6.1 assists, and 4.9 rebounds in 75 appearances last season, proving he still has plenty left to offer despite his veteran status. His addition to Sacramento’s lineup is seen as a major boost to their backcourt depth and leadership on and off the court.

The nine-time All-Star became a free agent in June following Denver’s exit in the Western Conference semi-finals. Now, as a King, Westbrook aims to bring his trademark intensity to a young, hungry team eager to make a deeper postseason run.

Kings general manager Scott Perry expressed excitement over the signing, describing Westbrook as the perfect fit for the team’s ambitions. “Russell embodies the identity we’re striving for in Sacramento,” Perry said. “His résumé speaks for itself, and his leadership and work ethic will help us reach the next level.”

The move also reunites Westbrook with the Western Conference, where he built much of his legendary reputation. Since being drafted in 2008 by the Seattle Supersonics (now Oklahoma City Thunder), the star guard has become one of the NBA’s most dynamic players.

With 203 career triple-doubles, Westbrook holds the NBA record, a testament to his all-around brilliance. He also led the league in scoring in 2015 and 2017, cementing his place among basketball’s elite.

Now on his seventh NBA team, Westbrook has previously represented the Houston Rockets, Washington Wizards, Los Angeles Lakers, and Los Angeles Clippers, among others. His wealth of experience could prove invaluable to a Kings roster looking to transition from playoff hopefuls to genuine contenders.

Though past his physical prime, his competitive spirit and leadership remain as fierce as ever.
