Ondo govt to launch instalment payment scheme for 50,000 smart meters

The Ondo State Government is set to roll out an instalment payment option for electricity meters for its citizens and communities, with the first phase targeting the deployment of 50,000 units.

Johnson Alabi, the State Commissioner for Energy and Mineral Resources, announced that the initiative is being implemented through the Ondo State Power Company (OSPC) under the “O’Datiwa Mass Metering Scheme.”

The programme is designed to provide residents with reliable, affordable, and transparent access to electricity while putting an end to estimated billing.

The commissioner disclosed that the first phase of the programme involves deploying 50,000 smart meters to households, businesses, and communities across the state.

A trial run is scheduled to commence this month, with the full installation process planned to begin in November 2025.

“With this programme, every citizen and business will have access to prepaid meters that guarantee fairness, transparency, and efficiency,” Alabi stated.

The rollout will be overseen by the Ondo State Power Company (OSPC) in collaboration with accredited Meter Asset Providers (MAPs) to ensure quality standards and the smooth operation of the scheme.

Alabi noted that the metering programme is expected to empower consumers and also strengthen the state’s electricity sector by boosting investor confidence and improving revenue assurance for operators.

He reaffirmed the commitment of the state governor to enhancing power supply and improving the livelihood of citizens.

The commissioner urged all residents to support the scheme, emphasising that it establishes a foundation for long-term electricity reforms and improved service delivery across the state.
