Seun Kuti, son of the late Afrobeat legend and human rights activist Fela Anikulapo Kuti, has condemned Nigerians who are celebrating the death of former President Muhammadu Buhari.

Buhari, who served as Nigeria’s elected president from 2015 to 2023 and previously ruled as a military leader from January 1984 to August 1985, passed away in London on Sunday at the age of 82 after a long illness.

Reacting via his verified Instagram page on Tuesday, Seun Kuti expressed disapproval over the jubilations that followed the news of Buhari’s death. He pointed out that despite the suffering the late president allegedly caused his family, he does not see his death as justice.

He said, “That an old man has died in old age after using our blood to secure the financial future of his generations is not justice. Nobody watching this live video can say that their family suffered in the hands of Buhari the way my family did.”

Kuti noted that many Nigerians failed to hold Buhari accountable while he was alive, questioning why they would now view his passing as a form of victory.

“Now, some of you will come online celebrating like his death is a victory for us. Did you charge him in court for his crime? Why do you think an old man dying of old age is justice?” he asked.

The singer also criticised the government’s use of public funds for Buhari’s prolonged medical care abroad, contrasting it with the poor state of healthcare available to ordinary Nigerians.

“Over £3,000 was spent every month for his treatment in the UK while Nigerians are dying in public hospitals. You think that’s justice?”

He concluded by recalling the pain his family endured and the lives lost under Buhari’s leadership.

“Buhari killed my friends, Buhari killed better men than me, men that should still be alive today. He killed my people. He killed the future of many Nigerians.”
