Zamfara State witnessed a major political shift on Tuesday as Vice President Kashim Shettima received Governor Dauda Lawal and his supporters into the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The high-profile reception in Gusau signalled a significant realignment in the state’s political landscape.
Addressing party members, he said the development effectively weakened opposition parties, noting that Zamfara’s political actors were now united under one platform.
Speaking on behalf of President Bola Tinubu, Mr Shettima reassured residents that efforts to tackle insecurity in the state were yielding results.

He expressed optimism that lasting peace was within reach, stressing the administration’s commitment to safeguarding lives and property nationwide.
He added that Lawal’s move to the APC would strengthen collaboration between the state and the Federal Government, particularly in addressing Zamfara’s security challenges.
The event attracted key APC figures from across the country.

Deputy Senate President Jibrin Barau, who represented the Senate leadership, described the governor’s defection as a strategic decision that would enhance cooperation in tackling the state’s challenges.
Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, said the development marked a turning point for Zamfara, adding that the state had effectively returned to its progressive political base.
Chairman of the Progressive Governors Forum and Governor of Imo State, Hope Uzodimma, described the move as beneficial to both the state and the party, assuring Governor Lawal of the support of APC governors nationwide.
APC National Chairman, Nentawe Yilwatda, commended Governor Lawal’s performance in office, highlighting ongoing infrastructural projects, including the construction of a new airport.
He then presented the governor with the party’s flag and symbolic broom, formally welcoming him into the APC.

In his remarks, Lawal acknowledged the support of key political figures in the state, including Minister of State for Defence Bello Matawalle and Senator Abdulazeez Yari.
He pledged to work closely with party stakeholders to strengthen the APC ahead of the 2027 general elections.
In a notable development, Mr Matawalle ruled out any intention to contest the governorship in 2027, declaring his support for Lawal as the party’s candidate.
The event underscored a new phase of political unity in Zamfara, with both former and current leaders now aligned under the APC as they seek to advance the state’s development and security agenda.
