Keir Starmer has announced that he is resigning as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom and also stepping down as leader of the Labour Party.
He described it as a difficult decision following pressure within his party and concerns about future elections.
He made the announcement outside 10 Downing Street, where he explained that his time in office was guided by his desire to put the country first.
He said becoming Prime Minister was a major moment in his life and reflected on the efforts made by his government since taking office

He also said he accepted that his party no longer felt he was the right person to lead them into the next general election.
Starmer said he had already informed the King of his decision during a phone call earlier in the day.

He added that he will remain in office temporarily until the Labour Party completes the process of choosing a new leader, which is expected to be done before Parliament returns in September.
During his statement, he became emotional while speaking about his family.
He spoke about his wife, Victoria, describing her as his strongest support, and said he wants to focus more on being present for his children after leaving office.
He also promised to ensure a smooth transfer of power and said he would support whoever becomes the next leader of the country.
He thanked his colleagues, staff, and civil servants for their work during his time in government.
Attention has now turned to who may replace him.
Andy Burnham, who recently won a parliamentary by-election, is among those being mentioned as a possible contender for the leadership position.
Party arrangements for selecting a new leader are expected to begin soon.
