Former France goalkeeper Steve Mandanda has officially hung up his gloves, bringing an end to a remarkable career filled with trophies and longevity on both club and international stages.
The 40-year-old veteran, whose contract with Rennes expired last July, confirmed his decision in an interview with L’Equipe.
Mandanda admitted the decision wasn’t easy, explaining that he took time to reflect after receiving several offers. Despite the opportunities, he declined each one, accepting that the time had come to step away.
Mandanda leaves behind a legacy as one of Ligue 1’s most reliable shot-stoppers. He is best remembered for his 14 seasons at Marseille, where he became an icon between the posts. His leadership and consistency defined Marseille’s Ligue 1 triumph in 2009–10 under Didier Deschamps.
Additionally, he lifted three Coupe de la Ligue trophies.These successes sealed his place as one of the club’s most influential figures.

Marseille icon and national team servant
Although Marseille defined much of his career, Mandanda also played abroad with Crystal Palace before enjoying a final stint with Rennes. Across 555 Ligue 1 appearances, he delivered an impressive 177 clean sheets.
On the international front, Mandanda earned 35 caps for France. He represented Les Bleus at World Cups and European Championships.
While often serving as a backup to Hugo Lloris, his professionalism and experience made him a trusted squad figure. He was part of France’s victorious 2018 World Cup squad, adding a crowning achievement to his résumé.
Despite never enjoying the spotlight as much as his contemporaries, Mandanda’s consistency, humility, and passion for the game ensured his place among France’s most respected footballers.
