Lionel Messi has officially retired from international football, bringing a tearful end to one of the most celebrated careers in the history of the game.
The 39-year-old announced his decision in an emotional statement, confirming that his final match for Argentina was the 2026 World Cup final defeat to Spain. “It was a decision that hurt, and still hurts deep down, but I understand that the time has come,” Messi wrote.
Messi’s farewell message, published on his social media channels, was a deeply personal reflection on his 20-year journey with the Albiceleste. He insisted he had given everything for the jersey long before the recent successes of the 2022 World Cup and Copa América.
“I swear to you that I always gave it my all: not just in these last few years when we won everything, but before that too; I always fought and left everything on the field for this jersey,” he wrote.
Acknowledging his age and the emergence of a new generation, Messi said: “Time is running short, chapters come to a close, and this is one that hurts me deeply. I love, have loved, and will always love being part of the National Team. I’ve given everything I had; I have nothing left to give, and besides, there are some great young players coming up who deserve to be here.”
The 39-year-old retires as Argentina’s all-time leading goalscorer and the most decorated player in football history. He led Argentina to victory at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, ending the country’s 36-year wait for the trophy. He also won the Copa América in 2021 and 2024 and the Finalissima in 2022.

His statement was dated July 21, two days after the World Cup final. He added: “Today, after what happened with my dad, I am even more convinced than before.” The reference to his father has not been clarified by the player.
