President Bola Tinubu has paid glowing tribute to former Head of State, General Abdulsalami Abubakar (rtd), in celebration of his 83rd birthday.

He commended his enduring legacy of peace, democratic leadership, and service to Nigeria.

In a statement released by the State House on Saturday, President Tinubu praised Abubakar’s decades of dedication to the country, both as a military officer and as a respected elder statesman.

He specifically highlighted the pivotal role the retired general played in Nigeria’s democratic journey, describing the peaceful handover of power in 1999 as a “watershed moment” in the nation’s history.

“His selfless act of handing over power paved the way for Nigeria’s Fourth Republic and strengthened the principle of constitutional democracy,” Tinubu stated.

The president also applauded Abubakar’s ongoing efforts as Chairman of the National Peace Committee, where he continues to champion national unity, promote peaceful dialogue, and support credible electoral processes.

Calling him “a patriot of uncommon integrity,” Tinubu noted that Abubakar’s wisdom and statesmanship remain invaluable at a time when leadership and unity are critically needed.

“His voice of moderation, reason, and statesmanship is deeply valued,” Tinubu added, wishing the former leader continued strength, good health, and divine grace.

Abubakar led Nigeria from 1998 to 1999 and is widely credited for steering the country towards democratic governance following years of military rule.
