President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has expressed deep sorrow over the death of Nigerian football great, Christian Chukwu, who passed away at 74. The late icon’s death has stirred grief among fans, friends, and members of the football community.

In a State House press release published by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy Bayo Onanuga on Saturday, Tinubu also acknowledged highlighted the veteran’s role in elevating Nigeria’s image through football. The President noted that the former national team captain’s commitment on and off the pitch shaped the nation’s football history.

Not only did Chukwu lead Nigeria to a historic Africa Cup of Nations victory in 1980, he later coached the Super Eagles to a bronze medal finish at the 2004 edition. His impact extended from player to manager, with passion, vision, and national pride defining his journey.

Although he played exclusively for Enugu Rangers, Chukwu achieved massive success with the club, including their 1977 African Cup Winners’ Cup triumph. This loyalty and consistency earned him respect and the popular nickname “Chairman”.

Moreover, President Tinubu lauded Chukwu’s legacy, describing it as enduring and inspiring. “Christian Chukwu was more than a footballer and coach. He was a symbol of excellence and patriotism,” he stated.

“His legacies will continue to live on in the trophies he won, the lives he touched, and the exciting moments he provided to football fans and spectators on the field and in the technical area.

“We are forever grateful for his contributions to the sport we all love, and we will always remember him with great respect and admiration.”
