Tinubu’s aide resigns over one-party fears

Aliyu Audu, the Senior Special Assistant to President Bola Tinubu on Public Affairs, has resigned from his position.

His resignation letter, dated 8 June took many by surprise as he did not provide detailed reasons in his formal letter to the President.

Audu expressed gratitude for the chance to work in the administration and for the approval of his appointment back in October 2023, but announced his departure was effective immediately.

Audu was initially brought into the role on the recommendation of one of Tinubu’s previous media advisers.

Despite his formal letter being brief, further explanations from him appeared in a personal statement online where he explained that his decision came from personal principles.

He said his resignation was not a sign of rebellion but a matter of conscience.

Audu stated that although he does not support the opposition party, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), he refuses to be part of actions that would lead Nigeria toward becoming a one-party state.

According to him, such a situation would betray both democratic ideals and a higher moral responsibility.

He mentioned the importance of allowing different political voices to exist and warned against silencing opposition groups just because one party holds power.

Audu argued that a healthy democracy requires competition among ideas, and political domination harms the country’s progress.

He also shared concerns that suppressing dissent contradicts freedom and spiritual values, suggesting that Nigerians should be mature enough to handle diverse opinions without fear.
