For months, speculation swirled around who would lead Mercedes into the new Formula 1 era. Team boss Toto Wolff has finally ended the suspense, confirming that George Russell and Kimi Antonelli will remain with the team into 2026.
Yet, behind the polished announcement was a long period of tension, fuelled by one name — Max Verstappen.
From early in the season, Verstappen’s shadow loomed large over Brackley. Wolff publicly dismissed talks of signing the Dutchman, calling such rumours “not on any radar.”
However, that statement did little to mask his interest. Everyone in the paddock knew that if Verstappen became available, Wolff would move mountains to sign him.
Russell, meanwhile, kept performing under immense pressure. His stunning win in Canada and consistent pace silenced many doubters. Still, as he later admitted, the uncertainty over Mercedes’ direction had created months of discomfort. “Maybe interests were not aligned,” he confessed before the Hungarian Grand Prix.

Russell holds his ground amid Verstappen speculation
At that point, Verstappen had already shut down the rumours, insisting it was time to “end all the noise.” Even so, the saga revealed just how fragile job security can be in Formula 1 — even for a driver of Russell’s calibre.
Having outperformed Lewis Hamilton in two of their three seasons together, Russell had proven himself a genuine team leader. Yet, in a sport where hierarchy is ruthless, Verstappen’s potential availability changed everything. Had the four-time world champion switched to Mercedes, Russell might have been the one to make way, despite rookie Antonelli’s inconsistent debut year.
Wolff’s dilemma was clear: Verstappen’s dominance was unmatched, but pairing him with Russell risked internal friction. The two drivers share a tense relationship, their rivalry dating back to a public clash last season.
Future uncertain despite new deal
With Verstappen now staying at Red Bull, Russell’s renewal came naturally, though negotiations were far from smooth. His new “multi-year” contract likely includes flexibility — protection in case Mercedes’ 2026 car underperforms.
Still, Wolff is unlikely to abandon his Verstappen dream. Much depends on next year’s competitive balance, as F1’s sweeping engine and fuel rule changes could reshuffle the grid.
For now, Russell remains Mercedes’ anchor. Yet, as Wolff noted, “In Formula 1, pressure never disappears. Comfort zones can be dangerous.” The message is clear — Russell’s fight for Mercedes supremacy is far from over.
