“Better late than never” — Benedict Iroha confident Super Eagles can soar to 2026 WC after Benin masterclass

Benedict Iroha praises Super Eagles’ 4–0 win over Benin, urging them to sustain form ahead of Morocco 2026 World Cup playoffs.

Former Nigeria international Benedict Iroha has tipped the Super Eagles to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup if they maintain the same energy and discipline that powered their stunning 4–0 win over Benin Republic in Uyo on Tuesday.

Speaking after the match, the ex-defender described the performance as a statement of intent and a reminder of what Nigeria can achieve when focused and united.

The victory sealed the Super Eagles’ qualification for the CAF World Cup Playoffs, set to take place in Morocco from November 13 to 16, 2025.

The Super Eagles were ruthless from start to finish, dictating the tempo and converting their dominance into goals. Victor Osimhen, the 2015 FIFA U-17 World Cup winner under coach Emmanuel Amuneke (MFR), netted a sensational hat-trick in the 3rd, 37th, and 51st minutes before Frank Onyeka added a stoppage-time strike to complete the demolition.

Iroha, who served as assistant coach when Nigeria’s Golden Eaglets won the 2007 FIFA U-17 World Cup, praised the team’s fighting spirit and resilience. “Congratulations to Nigerians and especially to the boys,” he said. “They played like warriors and got the reward they truly deserved.”

He described the emphatic victory as “fresh hope” for Nigeria’s World Cup dream, noting that it reflected growth and renewed belief. “If they sustain this level of play in the playoffs, qualification will surely be within reach,” he asserted.

The former Super Eagles left-back also applauded the players’ response to pressure. He emphasised that determination and teamwork made the difference. “You may say they left it late, but better late than never. Success tastes sweeter when it’s earned the hard way,” Iroha stated confidently.

As the Morocco playoffs approach, he urged the squad to remain humble and focused. “They must keep working, stay grounded, and build on this momentum,” he concluded.
