What should have been a night of joy for MC Alger and their passionate supporters turned tragic as celebrations were overshadowed by a fatal stadium collapse.
The Algerian champions had just secured their second consecutive league title after a goalless draw against NC Magra, but disaster struck moments after the final whistle at the 5 July Stadium in Algiers.
According to the Algerian health ministry, three people lost their lives after falling from the upper stand when a security barrier gave way.

The barrier reportedly collapsed under the weight of surging fans eager to celebrate their team’s triumph, sending dozens tumbling onto the lower tier. Local media reports confirmed that the incident triggered chaos as spectators scrambled for safety while emergency services rushed to respond.

In the aftermath, over 70 injured fans received treatment across three hospitals in the city. Thankfully, the health ministry later announced that the majority had been discharged. However, the emotional scars from the incident will linger much longer.
MC Alger’s players and staff also visited the hospitals, offering support and donating blood for the wounded.
The packed stadium had been alive with excitement during the match. Green smoke from flares filled the air as supporters cheered on their heroes. Yet, despite the electrifying atmosphere, disaster was just moments away. As the trophy presentation was set to begin, the celebrations were halted indefinitely in respect for the victims. The league officials then postponed the ceremony.
President Abdelmadjid Tebboune expressed his heartfelt condolences to the families of those who died. He also wished a swift recovery to the injured.
The heartbreaking event has left the club, its fans, and Algerian football mourning. The team’s on-pitch achievements were sadly eclipsed by the tragic scenes in the stands.
