Tragedy strikes as Plateau United football community mourns Lebwit Academy players

Plateau United mourns the death of four Lebwit Football Academy players

The Nigerian football community is in mourning following the tragic loss of four young players from Lebwit Football Academy, Kanke. The players died in a fatal accident on Kwanan Machiji road, Pankshin.

The unfortunate incident occurred as the team was returning from a friendly match in Pankshin. As painful as it is, the football family remains united in grief.

While the entire community is reeling from the news, Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) side Plateau United FC has extended heartfelt condolences to the academy and their families. Their words reflect the deep sorrow felt across the region.

According to Plateau United’s General Manager, “the sight of young football players dying as a result of accidents like these is quite discouraging but calls on authorities of Kanke Local Government Council to take heart and rather trust God for comfort in times like these.”

The deceased players have been identified as Shikritda Goma, Chapbe Gontur, Nenyitwe Gopar, and Dargak Caleb. They all had promising futures in football.

Meanwhile, some of their teammates sustained injuries during the crash and are currently receiving medical attention at General Hospital, Pankshin. The condition of the injured remains closely monitored.

This devastating blow has brought attention to safety concerns for teams traveling to grassroots games. Although it’s difficult to make sense of the tragedy, many believe that remembering the boys for their passion and talent is essential. Their legacy must inspire future players to dream, even through pain.

The incident has thrown Kanke into mourning, but tributes continue to pour in from across Nigeria’s football space. Football development in the region must now include better protection for its rising stars.
