The Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) has announced a formidable Nigerian squad that will represent the country at the 2025 World Relays holding in Guangzhou, China.
Although six relay events are available, Nigeria will feature in just four. The relays also serve as qualifiers for this year’s World Championships in Tokyo.
The events include the men’s and women’s 4x100m, the mixed 4x100m, and the mixed 4x400m relays. Despite the limited entries, the lineup is loaded with firepower. Names like Tobi Amusan, Favour Ashe, and Chidi Okezie headline a star-studded contingent.

In the men’s 4x100m, Alaba Akintola leads a squad packed with speedsters including Karlington Anunagba and Usheoritse Itsekiri. Notably, this group will be eyeing a podium finish and automatic qualification.

Meanwhile, the women’s 4x100m features explosive talents such as Favour Ofili, Rosemary Chukwuma, and Justina Eyakpobeyan. They are joined by seasoned athlete Tobi Amusan and rising sprinter Success Umukoro.
Interestingly, the mixed 4x100m team has overlapping names from both gender-based relays. This includes Ashe, Chukwuma, and Udodi Onwuzurike.
Also on the squad is the mixed 4x400m team, which includes Ifeanyi Ojeli, Patience Okon-George, and Samson Nathaniel. With experienced legs and youthful fire, they could cause a stir on the global stage.
Although competition will be stiff, Nigeria’s athletes are no strangers to pressure. Most have competed at the Olympics, World Championships, or African Games. Hence, expectations are understandably high.
While Tokyo remains the end goal, the Guangzhou Relays will be a test of team synergy and relay precision. However, securing qualification will offer much-needed relief and momentum ahead of Tokyo’s fierce competition.
With just weeks to go, the countdown has truly begun. Now, all eyes turn to Guangzhou as Nigeria makes another bid for international sprinting glory.
