“Unacceptable” — Van Dijk slams Liverpool’s season after latest defeat

Dutch defender Van Dijk demands better from himself and his Liverpool teammates after a disappointing season

Virgil van Dijk has not held back in assessing Liverpool’s struggles after he branded their campaign as far below standard. The captain’s remarks followed another setback against Manchester United.

“It’s been a very disappointing season, an unacceptable season, and it’s tough.” The Dutch defender stated.

Liverpool’s defeat marked their 18th loss across competitions this season, and for a defending champion, such numbers only show a dramatic fall from dominance.

Van Dijk insisted: “We shouldn’t feel sorry for ourselves whatsoever.”

“There will be a lot of work that has to be done going into next season.” Van Dijk said.

Despite inconsistency, Liverpool still chase qualification for the UEFA Champions League.

“We have to realise… to make sure that we are in the Champions League,” the former Southampton defender continued.

Van Dijk also addressed criticism surrounding training intensity and time off, stating that “we are not kids. Everyone is an adult.”

He pointed to balance as key, referencing Pep Guardiola’s approach. Rest and preparation, he suggested, must be carefully managed to sustain performance.

“I care so much about this club,” Van Dijk added. However, he stressed that this season “cannot be repeated.”

Liverpool sit well behind leaders Arsenal on the league table, obviously exposing the scale of the challenge ahead, as consistency remains a major missing piece in the Reds’ team.
