WAEC disowns viral list of 151 schools with withheld 2025 WASSCE results

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has dismissed a widely circulated list claiming that 151 secondary schools had their 2025 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) results withheld.

The council had on Monday released the 2025 WASSCE results, announcing that 192,089 candidates — 9.75 per cent of those who sat the May/June examination — had their results withheld over alleged examination malpractice.

Following the announcement, a letter dated August 4, 2025, surfaced online. It was purportedly signed by WAEC Nigeria’s Director of Examination Malpractice and Irregularities, Dr. Florence Ajayi, and alleged that principals of the listed schools should report to WAEC’s Lagos Zonal Office within 10 working days with relevant documents and candidates’ scripts.

The list included several well-known schools across the country such as Babington Macaulay Junior Seminary, Ikorodu; Atlantic Hall, Epe; Corona Secondary School, Agbara; Christ the King College, Onitsha; St. Louis Secondary School, Ondo; and Federal Government Girls’ College, Calabar.

However, WAEC, through its official X handle (@waecnigeria), urged the public to disregard the document, stressing that it did not originate from the council.

“Kindly ignore any message listing schools whose results were supposedly cancelled. WAEC will never ask any centre to bring scripts of candidates to the office. Where would they get them from? Do not accept any message that is not on our handles and accredited media,” the council stated.

The 2025 results, announced by WAEC’s Head of National Office, Dr. Amos Dangut, revealed that only 38.32 per cent of the 1,969,313 candidates obtained credit passes and above in at least five subjects, including English Language and Mathematics — a sharp drop from the 72.12 per cent recorded in 2024.

Dangut attributed the decline to stricter anti-malpractice measures introduced during the examination.
