Workers’ Day to preach the gospel of rest in the aspect of vacation

Today is Workers’ Day, and one would expect that I would talk about how you can work productively, but nahhh, I want to talk about rest in the aspect of vacation.

The concept of leave in the corporate workplace is continually underemphasized, and workers work day in, day out to serve their employers fully. Some organizations are so tight on employees that they cannot afford to let them go on leave.

Another side of the coin is that some workers are already used to the hustling lifestyle that they take leave allowance and decide not to leave work even when they are on leave.

Why do you need a leave from work?

The body demands rest, and sometimes rest at home does not cut it. You need to move to an entirely new environment to simulate your body to relax. When you are granted leave by your organization, it is not the time to work for an organization. It is time for you to engage in activities that will replenish your burnt-out creative juices.

The concept of vacation is an integral one. Every worker should always make sure that a part of their income goes towards saving for a vacation. Some companies take their employees’ well-being to heart, and they sponsor their vacations. If you do not belong to such companies just yet, make sure you can plan a vacation with the little you have. You do not have to cross seven seas and mountains to have a good vacation. What you need is somewhere totally different that works with your budget.

How to have a great vacation away from work

Vacation is not only for onsite workers but for remote workers too. Sometimes, remote workers tend to overwork themselves even outside working hours. Just because you work in the comfort of your home does not always mean that you are comfortable working. You need to take a break from your working area because, in this case, it is your home. Oh, please, without the work laptop! 

Set boundaries and reach an agreement with your workplace that once you are on vacation, no work-related activities should be on your tab. Oh, I know you are the worker of the year, but what is a vacation when you still work? A job relocation. During vacations, all work-related activities should be suspended till you are back, except in extreme cases.

Before vacations,  you also need to take the concept of work-life balance seriously. Believe me, I am not advocating that you become a nonchalant worker, but one thing is certain: if the ‘best’ worker dies today out of stress, work continues.

On a small scale, learn to carve out your time from your work time. This can be very easy for onsite workers whose personal time can be determined by when they leave work, but for remote workers, very much not so!  The foreign work system stays strict to time, respecting people’s boundaries after working hours, but the Nigerian system is still not up to date on that.

As a worker, demand your leave rights, especially if you work full-time. It is primarily for your health benefit. Take your vacation time seriously and strive to stay away from social media during that period. Seek to find pleasure in nature and delight in people’s company.
