2026 WC qualifier: Fans, journalists frustrated as Super Eagles drop points against Zimbabwe

Many Super Eagles fans have voiced their frustration following the Super Eagles’ 1-1 draw against Zimbabwe in their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo.

Eric Chelle’s men took the lead in the 74th minute through Galatasaray striker Victor Osimhen. However, their hopes of securing three points were dashed when Zimbabwe’s Tawanda Chirewa found the net in the 90th minute.

With this result, Nigeria remains in fourth place in Group C, trailing South Africa, Benin Republic, and Rwanda in the standings.

Disappointed supporters quickly took to X to express their discontent with the team’s performance.

One user, @Bashir_Mamu, lamented the possibility of missing another World Cup, while Popular journalist Adepoju Tobi Samuel questioned Nigeria’s qualification chances, stating that failing to beat Zimbabwe—a team at the bottom of the table—suggests the Super Eagles do not deserve a World Cup spot.

@MrAlaboRoland sarcastically advised the team to abandon hopes of reaching the tournament. Meanwhile, Olawale Quadri criticised the choice of venue, arguing that Uyo has been an unlucky ground for Nigeria. He suggested relocating to a different stadium.

Another fan, @temmy_israel, attributed the struggles to underperforming players. He urged the team to drop them in favour of better talents.

The draw against Zimbabwe has intensified concerns over Nigeria’s World Cup qualification campaign. Right now, the chances of the Super Eagles qualifying for the 2026 World Cup is now slimmer.
