Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has said that the 2027 general election could mark his last attempt at the presidency.
He pointed to his age and the growing weight of Nigeria’s political moment.
Speaking during an interview on Arise Television on Wednesday evening, the politician was candid about the realities of time and ambition.
When asked whether turning 80 before the next election added pressure to his campaign, Atiku admitted that the race would likely be his final shot.
“Certainly yes, because the stakes are higher and I believe that will be my last outing,” he said.
Atiku’s pursuit of the presidency has stretched across decades, making him one of the most persistent figures in Nigeria’s democratic journey.

His ambition dates back to 1993, when he stepped down during the Social Democratic Party primaries in support of the late Moshood Abiola.
Since Nigeria’s return to civilian rule in 1999, he has remained a constant presence on the ballot.
In 2007, he contested under the Action Congress, losing to Umaru Musa Yar’Adua.
In 2011, he ran on the platform of the Action Congress of Nigeria, losing to Goodluck Jonathan. In 2019, he emerged as the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, losing to Muhammadu Buhari.

Also, in 2023, Atiku returned as the PDP flagbearer but was defeated by incumbent President Bola Tinubu.
