2026 World Cup: Ghana names Queiroz Black Stars coach‎‎

Carlos Queiroz

The Ghana Football Association on Monday appointed Portuguese tactician Carlos Queiroz as head coach of the Black Stars, tasking him with leading the team at the 2026 FIFA World Cup in Canada, Mexico, and the United States, which kicks off on June 11.

‎The appointment, announced via a press statement, comes after Otto Addo was dismissed following a string of poor results that disrupted Ghana’s build-up to the tournament.

‎Queiroz, 71, brings vast international experience. He has managed Portugal, Iran, and South Africa, and previously coached Real Madrid while serving as assistant to Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester United.

His reputation for discipline and tactical organisation is expected to be crucial for a side that has lost four consecutive matches, including defeats to Austria and Germany.

‎”We needed a coach with proven pedigree and the ability to stabilise the team quickly,” a GFA official said, stressing the urgency of the decision with just weeks to go before the World Cup.

‎Ghana faces a tough group stage against England, Croatia, and Panama. Their opening match is scheduled for June 17 in Toronto, leaving Queiroz limited time to instill his philosophy and rebuild confidence.

‎In his first message to Ghanaians, Queiroz struck a personal tone, “This is not just another job — it is a mission. Ghana is a nation of talent, pride, and footballing soul. Together, with unity, discipline, and ambition, we will work to honour the expectations of a great football nation.”

‎For the Black Stars, Queiroz’s arrival is more than a change of leadership, it is a bid to restore belief and structure at a defining moment.

As the countdown to the World Cup continues, the nation waits to see if his experience can turn recent struggles into a spirited campaign.
