Former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, has sent a clear message to electoral umpires and political actors ahead of the 2027 General Elections, declaring that the era of ignored ballots is over.
In a statement posted on his X page on Monday, Obi emphasised that the upcoming polls must serve as a turning point for Nigeria’s democracy.
He warned that anyone who attempts to subvert the will of the people will be held legally and historically accountable.
Obi called on the Nigerian electorate to transition from mere voters to active guardians of their mandates.

The former governor of Anambra State urged citizens to stay behind at their polling units to monitor every stage of the process, from the first ballot cast to the final electronic transmission.
“I encourage everyone to remain at the polling units after voting to count and witness the counting and transmission of results,” Obi stated.
The former governor did not mince words when addressing potential riggers or complicit officials.
He framed the act of electoral malpractice as a direct assault on the nation’s future, promising that the full weight of the law would be brought to bear on those who committed such offences.
He said those who obstruct the counting process will be identified as “those destroying Nigeria.”
Obi stressed that anyone who refuses to let the votes count will “count the full weight of the law against rigging.”
He reiterated that failing to count votes is equivalent to destroying the future of the Nigerian youth.
Obi’s statement comes amidst heightened discussions regarding the Electoral Act and the mandatory electronic transmission of results.
“If you do not count our votes, we will count you among those who destroy our democracy…and you must answer to the law,” he said.
