Sanwo-Olu hails Rukayat Suleimon after historic World Sambo gold

Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has congratulated Nigerian athlete Rukayat Suleimon after she made history at the World Sambo Cup, securing a landmark gold medal performance that has drawn global attention.

Suleimon carved her name into the record books as the first female blind sambist in the world to win gold at an international competition, marking a breakthrough moment for both Nigeria and adaptive sports.

Competing in the womenโ€™s 54kg category, Suleimon delivered a standout performance in Yerevan, demonstrating resilience, technical precision and composure throughout the tournament.

She overcame strong opposition from athletes representing Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, and Kyrgyzstan to clinch the top prize in what was her international debut.

Her achievement also places her among the first generation of female athletes recognised by the International Sambo Federation (FIAS), further highlighting the historic nature of her victory.

In a statement issued on Monday through his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Gboyega Akosile, Sanwo-Olu praised Suleimonโ€™s feat as a reflection of Nigeriaโ€™s growing global sporting reputation.

โ€œI am so proud of her becoming the first Nigerian and African to win gold at an international sambo event and the first female blind sambist globally to achieve such a feat,โ€ the governor said.

He added that her success was not accidental, but the result of discipline, preparation, determination, and sustained commitment.

Sanwo-Olu also noted that Suleimonโ€™s victory goes beyond sport, describing her as an inspiration to young Nigerians, particularly girls and persons living with disabilities.

He said her journey reinforces the message that limitations do not define potential, and that excellence can be achieved regardless of circumstance.
