Sanwo-Olu approves ₦50,000 bonus for workers

Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has approved a one-off ₦50,000 wage award for public sector workers, in a move aimed at easing the rising cost of living.

The announcement was made on Friday at Mobolaji Johnson Arena during the 2026 International Workers’ Day celebrations.

Represented by his deputy, Obafemi Hamzat, the governor explained that the payment would be made for May as immediate support in response to prevailing economic challenges.

Addressing workers and union leaders at the event, Sanwo-Olu acknowledged the strain caused by rising fuel prices and global economic instability.

“Lagos is not great because of its government; it is great because of its workers—teachers, healthcare professionals, artisans and civil servants,” he said.

“This intervention is designed to support them through this difficult period.”

The governor also outlined broader efforts to address the underlying pressures facing workers, particularly in housing and transportation.

On housing, he said the state government remained committed to expanding access to affordable homes, with plans to deliver thousands of new units before the end of 2026.

He pointed to the rent-to-own scheme, which allows workers to secure accommodation with a five per cent initial payment and spread the balance over time.

Infrastructures

On transportation, Sanwo-Olu highlighted ongoing investments in rail infrastructure to reduce commuting costs.

He noted that the system had already transported millions of passengers, with additional coaches being introduced to improve capacity and efficiency.

He also reassured retirees that pension payments would continue without disruption, reaffirming the government’s commitment to their welfare.

Sanwo-Olu reiterated his administration’s willingness to engage constructively with organised labour.

He assured workers that the state’s “Prosperity” agenda would remain inclusive and responsive to their needs.

However, the Head of Service, Bode Agoro, stressed that a productive public service depended on a well-motivated workforce.

He added that improving workers’ welfare was critical to delivering effective governance and sustaining development.
