A new initiative will support and fund open-source Chromium projects

Estimated reading time: 2 minutes

Currently, Google collaborated with the Linux Foundation to create a new project called “Supporters of Chromium-Based Browsers.” At the moment, most of the funds that sustain Chromium, the open-source Web browser project from which the code base for Chrome emerged, originate from Google. The company explains that it has no plans to cut its share in the future, but it also maintains that it encourages others to increase their share.

Instead, the newly formed effort under the Linux Foundation will help fund Chromium’s open-source development and ensure adequate care for potentially groundbreaking submissions. It is also intended to offer a “neutral ground” for developers, members of the academe, and giant stakeholders. Apart from Google, Microsoft, Meta, and Opera, Opera has also given its support for the move.
