Afrobeats dominated by Lagos, Yoruba influence – Omah Lay

Nigerian singer Omah Lay has stirred debate after stating that the Afrobeats genre is largely centred in Lagos and heavily influenced by the Yoruba ethnic group, making it difficult for artists from other regions to break into the scene.

The Port Harcourt–born singer explained that musicians from outside Lagos often face significant challenges trying to gain recognition within the city’s music industry.

According to him, his journey into the Lagos-based music industry was demanding, noting that coming from Port Harcourt meant he had to put in extra effort before gaining acceptance.

He made the remarks during the listening party for his upcoming album, Clarity Of Mind, where he also spoke about his personal growth and changing priorities in the industry.

The singer added that he has reached a stage in his career where he no longer seeks validation from either the Lagos music establishment or the global entertainment industry.

Instead, he said he now focuses on the support he receives from people who genuinely care about him, particularly his fans and family.

“Afrobeats is mainly Lagos. It is mainly Yorubas. Fela Kuti is the pioneer, we all know that and he is Yoruba. I am from Port Harcourt and you have to break into Lagos. There are only two people from PH that you know; Burna Boy and me.

“It got to a point I am like, you know what? I am going to take my time and look at my family and fans; people who really love me, I am going to stay there. The rest of you, the rest of the world, don’t love me. F**k off. That is it,” he said.
