Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo State has cautioned aspirants within the All Progressives Congress (APC) against adopting a “do-or-die” mentality ahead of the party’s forthcoming primaries.

He stressed the need to strictly respect existing zoning arrangements to safeguard peace and fairness.

He gave the warning during a strategic stakeholders’ meeting held in Owerri.

The meeting brought together party aspirants, state executives, and key stakeholders to harmonise positions and set clear guidelines for a smooth and credible primary process.

Speaking at the meeting, Uzodimma urged aspirants to place the unity of the party above individual political interests.

He noted that internal contests must be conducted in a calm and orderly manner.

He reminded participants that elections, by nature, produce only one winner per position and therefore require maturity and acceptance of outcomes.

“I strongly admonished against the ‘do-or-die’ approach to the primaries,” he said.

“The process must remain peaceful, transparent, and guided by the collective interest of the party. As loyal members, we must all be ready to support whoever emerges victorious.”

Zoning

A key issue at the meeting was the enforcement of the state’s zoning arrangement.

Uzodimma described zoning as a long-standing mechanism designed to promote fairness, inclusion, and balanced political representation across different constituencies.

He advised aspirants whose ambitions conflict with the established zoning structure to reconsider their positions in the interest of party stability and cohesion.

He highlighted that adherence to zoning would help to promote fairness and equity, ensuring no group feels sidelined and strengthening inclusiveness, giving all constituencies a sense of belonging.

Uzodimma also reinforced party unity, reducing the risk of post-primary disputes and defections.

The meeting ended with a renewed commitment from party leaders to ensure a transparent and well-managed primary election.

The APC leadership in Imo State said it would work to address potential areas of tension early and maintain discipline within the process.

With zoning respected and internal disagreements managed constructively, the party hopes to present a united front ahead of the general elections under the banner of APC.
