The Awujale and paramount ruler of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, has passed away at the age of 91.
The revered traditional ruler died on Sunday, just hours after the nation was shaken by the death of former President Muhammadu Buhari, his longtime friend.
Oba Adetona, who ascended the throne in 1960, held one of the longest reigns among Nigerian monarchs and was widely admired for his influential role in the social and political development of Ijebuland and Ogun State.
A member of the Ijebu royal family, Prince Adedoyin Alatishe, shared his grief in a post on X, writing, “Baami Ogbagba agbatewole 💔. Erin wo. Omo anikilaya saagbu.”
Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State confirmed the monarch’s death in a statement released from Abeokuta and also shared the announcement on his official X account.
“We mourn the passing of Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, Awujale of Ijebuland,” the governor wrote.
“With deep sorrow, we announce the transition of His Royal Majesty, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, the Awujale and Paramount Ruler of Ijebuland, who joined his ancestors today, July 13, 2025, at the age of 91. This sad development, coinciding with the passing of former President Muhammadu Buhari, marks a profound loss not just for Ogun State, but for the entire nation.”

Governor Abiodun praised the late monarch as a symbol of unity, wisdom, and development. He highlighted the transformation that took place in Ijebuland under Adetona’s reign, describing a period marked by cultural revival, infrastructure upgrades, and economic growth.
“Oba Adetona, who ascended the throne in 1960, was a symbol of unity, wisdom, and development. Under his reign, Ijebuland witnessed unparalleled cultural renaissance, infrastructural growth, and economic advancement.”
The governor also noted the Awujale’s role in elevating the Ojude Oba festival to international prominence and his consistent dedication to causes like education, health, and cultural preservation.
“His role in elevating the Ojude Oba festival to global recognition, alongside his enduring commitment to education, health, and tradition, will remain a timeless legacy,” Abiodun said.
He concluded his tribute with a solemn prayer: “We honour his remarkable contributions and pray that his soul finds eternal rest.”
