Bovi knocks Super Eagles over defeat to Morroco

Nigerian comedian Bovi Ugboma has criticized the Super Eagles following their exit from the Africa Cup of Nations after losing to Morocco in the semifinal.

The national team crashed out of the tournament on Wednesday after a 4–2 loss on penalties to the host nation in Rabat, ending Nigeria’s hope of winning a fourth AFCON title.

Reacting in a video shared on Instagram on Thursday, Bovi blamed the defeat on distractions caused by social media and the effect of constant praise from fans.

He also pointed to unresolved match bonuses, saying these issues affected the players’ drive and focus on the pitch.

The comedian warned that players should not accept national team invitations if they are not fully ready to give their best for the country.

He explained that football remains one of the few things that bring Nigerians together, and those who wear the green and white jersey carry a heavy responsibility.

Bovi stated that representing Nigeria goes beyond personal gain or recognition, adding that players must understand the emotional connection millions of Nigerians have with the team.

He said choosing personal glory ahead of national success often leads to disappointment.

While excusing Samuel Chukwueze for missing his penalty, Bovi noted that every player must remember they are playing for an entire nation.

He advised the team to ignore delayed payments and block out online praise, stressing that fans care more about results and commitment than individual popularity.

He concluded by saying that many supporters are attached to what the players deliver on the field, not to their personal image, and urged current and future Super Eagles players to take national duty more seriously.

He said; “Football is the only thing that unites Nigeria. So dear Super Eagles and intending Super Eagles, have it in mind that if you are playing for Nigeria, regardless of how the NFF treats you, understand that you have the potential to unite Nigerians.

“I forgive Samuel Chukwueze for missing a penalty. But you need to understand that the weight of a nation lies in your hands. But if you go for glory before victory, more often than not, you will become the victim.

“Don’t come to the Super Eagles if you know you are not ready to give everything for the nation. If NFF delays your payment, let it go. Social media has distracted you all, and the praise got to your heads. Not just from this tournament, but also previous tournaments. You don’t understand that the fans don’t like you, they like what you do.”
