CAC to shut down unregistered PoS operators January 1

The Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) has announced a nationwide clampdown on unregistered Point-of-Sale (PoS) operators in Nigeria beginning 1 January 2026.

The commission said the action follows a surge in PoS agents operating without required registration, a violation of the Companies and Allied Matters Act (CAMA) 2020 and the Central Bank of Nigeria’s Agent Banking Regulations.

In a statement issued on Saturday, the CAC warned that any PoS operator without CAC registration will face immediate shutdown once enforcement begins.

The agency added that security operatives will be deployed across the country to ensure full compliance from fintech companies and PoS agents.

It noted that the rising trend of unregistered PoS activity, often supported by certain fintech platforms, exposes the financial system and customer funds to significant risks.

The commission stressed that the practice must end to safeguard the integrity of Nigeria’s payments ecosystem.

According to the statement, unregistered PoS terminals will be seized or disabled by security officials during the enforcement exercise.

The CAC also warned that fintech companies enabling illegal PoS operations will be placed on a watchlist and reported to the Central Bank of Nigeria for regulatory action.

It urged all operators to regularise their registration immediately, adding that compliance is mandatory for continued operation.
