Delta Queens beat Bayelsa Queens to emerge NWFL champions


Delta Queens have been named champions of the 2022/23 Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) after defeating Bayelsa Queens 2-1 on Sunday evening.

The game marked the conclusion of the 2022/23 Super Six Championship playoffs.

Last seasonā€™s winners Bayelsa Queens failed in their bid to defend the title as a brace by Chinaza Agoh condemned the Bayelsa-based outfit to defeat.

Bayelsa Queens led 14 minutes into the game, thanks to an own goal by Chisom Henry, and saw out the first half with the 1-0 score line.

However, their opponents, Delta Queens returned for the second half a more determined side.

Delta Queens levelled matters in the 67th minute when substitute Agoh scored a fantastic acrobatic kick.

The player completed her brace in the 86th minute to confirm Delta Queens as Champions of the NWFL.

The Asaba-based side have now claimed the N10 million grand prize as well as emerging Nigeria’s representatives in the women’s CAF Champions League. Also, Delta Queens automatically qualify for the WAFU B Womenā€™s CAF Champions League qualifier happening later in the year.

In the regional Champions League qualifiers, the best two teams (finalists) will advance to the women continental Champions League main tournament.
