England’s defensive concerns continue to grow before Saturday’s World Cup quarter-final against Norway after it was confirmed defender Marc Guehi will undergo a fitness assessment following a hamstring problem suffered against Mexico.
The centre-back picked up the issue during England’s thrilling 3-2 last-16 victory. Initially, the discomfort appeared to be muscular fatigue rather than a strain.
However, further assessment suggests the Manchester City star has sustained a minor hamstring strain. Even so, Guehi remains determined to prove his fitness before kickoff.
His availability depends heavily on Friday’s training session. Failure to train with teammates would leave serious doubts over his selection.
Declan Rice also missed training for a second consecutive day because of illness. The midfielder has battled a neural issue affecting his hamstring and lower back.

England’s medical staff have introduced measures to prevent the sickness bug spreading. Nevertheless, Rice’s condition remains under close observation.
James returns while England weigh defensive options ahead of quarter-final
There was encouraging news elsewhere for Thomas Tuchel as Chelsea captain Reece James returned to full training after recovering from his hamstring injury.

Although James did not complete every drill, he is expected to feature against Norway. His comeback provides valuable cover at a difficult position.
England’s right-back options have already been reduced by injuries and suspension. Jarell Quansah also became unavailable after receiving a two-match FIFA ban.

Earlier, Newcastle defender Tino Livramento withdrew before the tournament through injury, with Trevoh Chalobah called up to replace him as he remains another defensive option.
If Guehi cannot play, John Stones, Dan Burn and Chalobah are available centrally. England know they must contain Erling Haaland without unnecessary fitness risks.
Ezri Konsa reflected on switching positions against Mexico. “With the heat and everything and having to change positions, going to right wing-back with a man down, it’s not easy,” he said.
“You have to tuck in and then, when the ball gets switched, you’ve got to run out and try and stop crosses.”

Konsa praised Stones for his support throughout the match. “He even asked to swap positions,” he added.
“But I told him: ‘No, don’t worry, it’s fine. I’ll always play wherever the manager wants me to play.'”
