Feyenoord axe Van Persie despite Champions League return

Feyenoord have parted ways with Robin van Persie after a brief yet eventful managerial spell. The decision arrives just 16 months into his tenure.

The former striker guided the Rotterdam side to a second-place finish last season, with that achievement securing a vital return to Champions League football.

However, the gap to champions PSV Eindhoven proved significant. Feyenoord finished 19 points behind, raising concerns about long-term competitiveness.

The club’s leadership acted swiftly following structural changes behind the scenes as Devy Rigaux and Robert Eenhoorn recently assumed key executive roles.

“Robin van Persie has given everything for the club over the past 1.5 years,” a club statement read.

“He certainly deserves credit for concluding a difficult season with a final second-place finish,” the statement added.

Yet, deeper evaluation revealed worrying patterns in performance and consistency, after results dipped across both domestic and European competitions.

“We conducted a thorough internal analysis. The conclusion was that it is better to start the next season with a new head coach,” the club statement further read.
