Alejandro Garnacho’s Manchester United future appears all but over after head coach Ruben Amorim reportedly approved his departure this summer.
The Argentine winger’s relationship with Amorim has been strained – and it has now seemingly reached a breaking point.
Tensions flared after United’s Europa League final loss to Tottenham, where Garnacho was only introduced in the 71st minute. Though he played a key role throughout the campaign, his limited final appearance left him puzzled and disappointed.
Speaking candidly post-match, he hinted at his frustration, suggesting the final might impact his decision to stay or leave.

However, it wasn’t just Garnacho speaking out. His brother Roberto fanned the flames further, posting on social media that the 20-year-old had been “thrown under the bus” despite working hard and scoring in previous finals. That reaction intensified speculation, and The Athletic now reports that Amorim has sanctioned a summer exit.

Notably, Chelsea nearly secured a deal for Garnacho in January, while Serie A champions Napoli are also interested. Born in Spain and developed in United’s academy since his switch from Atlético Madrid in 2020, Garnacho remains one of the club’s brightest young assets.
Although Amorim avoided giving a direct answer when quizzed about the winger ahead of the final league match against Aston Villa, he emphasised United have plans in place regardless of whether they qualify for Europe or not. Still, his comments left Garnacho’s fate hanging in the balance.
Moreover, Garnacho’s ‘homegrown’ status makes him an attractive sale option under the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules. If sold, his departure would help United free up funds for reinforcements.
Amorim is keen on reshaping the squad, especially with no European football next season. Also, the Red Devils are strongly linked to Wolves star Matheus Cunha, who has a £62.5 million release clause.
But the cracks between player and manager had appeared earlier. In December, Amorim dropped both Garnacho and Marcus Rashford for the Manchester derby. He cited poor training performance and lack of team engagement for his decision. While Rashford returned quickly, Garnacho has never quite fit the Portuguese boss’s preferred system.
Garnacho has scored 11 times this season – making him United’s second-highest scorer. However, he was overlooked in key moments, including the Bilbao semi-final. Amorim opted instead for Amad Diallo and Mason Mount behind Rasmus Hojlund, once again sidelining the talented winger.
