Google Messages brings editable texts to iPhone recipients

Google Messages is rolling out support for editing RCS texts sent to iPhone users within a 15 minute window.

Android users can long press a sent message, tap the pencil icon, adjust content, and resend to correct errors or typos.

This cross platform editing became possible thanks to the Universal Profile 3.0 update, which adds support for editing and encryption.

The feature is currently in limited beta release for Android users who have RCS enabled and updated Google Messages.

When edited messages reach iPhone users, they appear as a new message marked with an asterisk rather than inline edits.

Those on Android can edit messages in group chats or individual threads sent to iOS devices running the latest versions.

Currently iPhone users cannot edit messages they send to Android devices, as that functionality requires Apple updating its Messages app.

Android to Android edits and iPhone to iPhone edits have existed since Universal Profile supported it last year, but cross platform is new.

Edited messages show an “Edited” timestamp beneath them in Android conversations, signaling changes since sending.

On iPhones the edited version appears as separate text starting with an asterisk, reflecting limited compatibility.

Google and Apple previously resisted RCS editing due to encryption concerns but Universal Profile 3.0 addresses security gaps.

The rollout remains gradual and may take weeks or months to reach all users depending on device and carrier support.

This update enhances texting accuracy, giving Android users more control over sent messages across platforms.

Its success depends on Apple adopting RCS editing, and once supported the experience could unify text messaging standards globally.
