Yesterday, I heard someone play Tems’ Grammy acceptance speech repeatedly. As a student of Public Speaking, I can pinpoint several faults with the speech.
Every Grammy nominee in the different categories should have prepared an acceptance just in case they win a category. That makes them a little bit prepared for the special occasion. Though they might be caught by surprise at least they have got a mental picture of what they are to say.
Tems’ Grammy acceptance speech lacks depth
Tems at the start of her speech tries to infuse a bit of comedy into her speech but that was a farce because the rest of her speech did not carry as much weight as anticipated.
She found herself blabbing about extraneous information and not focusing on a groundbreaking theme to commemorate her achievement.
The Grammy winner tries to include her mum in her speech by giving her a shoutout but it would have been meaningful if she related her mum’s efforts to making her music great.
Tems only gave a birthday shoutout and thanked her for raising her brother well. That was a piece of information that was not useful to her latest feat.
Tems thanked her manager, very nice but went on to thank her friends, sweet! but her stylist, nahhh. She is not receiving an award for the best-dressed celebrity but a Grammy Award for Best African Music.
The least she could do was refer Seyi Sodimu whose song she sampled for her Grammy-winning song, Love Me Jeje.It was a one-minute speech that had three sentences glorifying God.
That is a really good track – a faith believing speech but the speech lacked a special context and depth. It does not contain why the award was received or what caused the award received. Someone who is not familiar with the context might not get the gist of the story.
Grammy award recipients need to work on their speech delivery ahead of their big day. They should be able to give speeches that reciprocate the award they are receiving.
Their speeches should portray so much brilliance their song produces and not be mediocre in return.
From Big Tems, I expected a mind-blowing speech that could jeer half of Nigeria’s female population into a music career.

Beyonce’s 2025 Grammy Acceptance Speech
Not in direct comparison to Beyonce Knowles Carter but after she received the award for the Album of the Year, she gave quite a remarkable speech to celebrate this feat. In her brief and concise speech, she lets people know how she feels about the awards, and provides a brief context about the feat- she has been a major contender in this category for years. Also, she proceeds to thank all the people who contributed to the success of the album, Cowboy Carter.
According to Today, she also took a moment to thank Linda Martell, a Black country artist referenced on the “Cowboy Carter” track “The Linda Martell Show.”
This reference is quite a great one and one Tems should have employed while making her speech. She should have referenced Seyi Sodimu. Doing this will have brought more integrity to speech. It is a pure act of pathos to relate your speech to someone worthy of acknowledgment.
The Grammy winner, Beyonce gave credit to Miss Martel for setting the trail and also gave a resolving statement and admonishment to all who were listening to her. That was a brief, concise speech with impact not in performance but in choice of words. It was indeed a head swell moment.
To every Nigerian creative who desires to be on the global stage for recognition, endeavor to learn the art of public speaking. Always have a prepared speech in mind. Your speeches are expected to be extemporaneous but only speeches you have mastered can be presented extemporaneously.
