Ilkay Gündogan has penned a heartfelt message to Manchester City fans after bringing his remarkable journey with the club to a close.
The German midfielder, who became Pep Guardiola’s very first signing at City in 2016, confirmed his move to Galatasaray while expressing gratitude for eight unforgettable years in Manchester.
In his farewell note, Gündogan explained his reasons for leaving with complete honesty. “I want to be honest with you,” he wrote to supporters, “the reason why I’m leaving is very simple: I still want to play football as often as possible, because that’s what I love the most.” For him, the hunger to remain on the pitch outweighed everything else.
Although he is approaching 35, he stressed that he remains physically sharp and ambitious. “I still feel very fit and I truly believe I can continue to perform at a high level for a Champions League team,” he insisted, making it clear that his decision is not about slowing down but chasing new challenges.

A legacy built on success and memories

“I now have the opportunity to join my childhood favourite club, in a country that means so much to me,” he said.
Nevertheless, he acknowledged that Manchester City itself is also undergoing change.
“Man City want a new beginning after an incredible era – something I can fully understand and respect,” he explained, showing grace in accepting the club’s evolution.
Gündogan was careful to spotlight the people who defined his journey at the Etihad.
“I will never, ever forget what this great club has done for me over so many years,” he wrote, before adding, “Most of my time here was absolutely fantastic and incredibly successful.”
His words echo the emotions of many fans who witnessed him score decisive goals, dictate midfield battles, and lift silverware year after year.
Captain, leader, and club legend
Beyond trophies, Gündogan made sure to recognise individuals who helped shape his career.
“I want to thank all my teammates, the chairman, everyone working behind the scenes, every fan – and of course Pep, who made this amazing time possible,” he noted.
The tribute to Guardiola, in particular, was poignant, as their bond was instrumental to City’s domestic dominance and European breakthrough.
The German maestro also emphasised that his gratitude extends beyond football. “The club and the city of Manchester will always hold a very special place in my heart,” he wrote, reminding supporters that his farewell is not a severing of ties but a continuation of respect and love.
Gündogan departs as a captain who lifted City’s first-ever Champions League trophy in 2023, completing an historic Treble. His calm leadership and decisive performances – such as his brace in the FA Cup final against Manchester United – will forever be remembered by City fans.
As he signed off, he did so with warmth: “I’m leaving City with great gratitude – thank you – on behalf of my whole family.”
