Ushie Rita Uguamaye, a corps member serving in Lagos, has apologised for comments she made in a viral video criticising government policies and living conditions in the state.
Last week, Uguamaye sparked controversy when she called President Tinubu a “terrible leader” and questioned the government’s efforts in addressing economic hardships. She also described the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) scheme as not “beneficial.”
Her remarks drew mixed reactions from government officials, the NYSC, and Lagos residents, leading to widespread debate on social media.
In a follow-up post, Uguamaye clarified her stance and apologised to those who felt offended by her words, particularly Lagos natives.
“I’m sorry for those born and raised in Lagos state if you feel offended by what I said. But as a visitor here, I could tell there was a difference in the atmosphere and air quality,” she wrote.

She further explained that while her concerns remained valid, she did not intend to disrespect anyone’s home state.
“The complaints I made are valid, regardless of whatever lifestyle you think I’m living. I work 45+ hours a week and should be able to afford to hang out with my friends every weekend. However, I can’t. You spend all week working and can’t even feel alive on the weekends.”
Despite the backlash, Uguamaye maintained that Nigerians should continue demanding better living conditions.
“I encourage all of us to ask for what we believe we deserve. I know distractions will take us again very soon. But if we stay committed to asking for better, we will get better,” she added.
