‘I want my kids to come home safely’ – British-Nigerian rapper Skepta on why he cares about Nigeria

British-Nigerian rapper Skepta has defended his decision to speak about issues affecting Nigeria, saying his connection to the country gives him every right to express concern about its future.

In a post shared on X, the award-winning musician said he has always cared about Nigeria despite being based in the United Kingdom and challenged suggestions that he should remain silent on developments in the country.

“I am British, Nigerian yes but I’ve always cared about Nigeria and anybody that has followed my career can vouch for that,” Skepta wrote.

The rapper explained that he owns property in Nigeria and wants his children to be able to visit and enjoy the country in a safe environment.

“I have houses in Nigeria, I want to take my kids home to a safe country just like we travel the rest of the world,” he stated.

Skepta questioned criticism over his comments on national issues, arguing that his heritage and personal investments in the country justify his interest in its progress and wellbeing.

“Why should I not speak up about what is happening in my homeland?” he asked.

The remarks come amid reactions to comments he recently made about conditions in Nigeria. The discussion has generated debate on social media, with some users supporting his views while others questioned his perspective as a member of the diaspora.

Born Joseph Junior Adenuga, Skepta is one of the United Kingdom’s most influential grime artistes and has frequently highlighted his Nigerian roots throughout his career. He has also maintained cultural and business ties with Nigeria over the years.

His latest comments add to broader conversations about the role of Nigerians in the diaspora in discussions concerning governance, development and social issues in the country.
