The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has cleared BON Bread, produced by Food & Food Integrated Company Limited, of any wrongdoing after investigating claims that the bread remained mould‑free for more than two months.
In a press release signed by Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, Director‑General of NAFDAC, the agency confirmed that the manufacturer is in full compliance with regulatory standards.
The agency explained that laboratory tests showed the bread contained calcium propionate, a permitted preservative within Codex Alimentarius limits, and did not include objectionable substances such as bromate or non‑nutritive sweeteners.

The investigation was prompted by a social media post on April 13, 2026, alleging that a loaf of bread had stayed fresh for over two months without mould. Although the complainant did not identify the brand, Food & Food Integrated Company Limited publicly acknowledged that the product was BON Bread and described the allegation as misleading.

The viral claim sparked widespread debate online and raised consumer fears about food safety, prompting NAFDAC to launch a scientific inquiry.
According to the statement, inspectors visited the company’s bakery in Abuja, collected samples from both the production site and the open market, and conducted laboratory analyses.
The findings revealed that the bread contained calcium propionate within permissible limits and no harmful additives.
NAFDAC further confirmed that the company has maintained regulatory compliance since 2006, with several licence renewals and no record of penalties or product recalls.
Prof. Adeyeye emphasized, “BON Bread is safe and meets all regulatory requirements. The amount of preservative used is within internationally approved limits.”
NAFDAC assured the public that Food & Food Integrated Company Limited is not in violation of any regulation. Also encouraged Nigerians to report concerns about regulated products through its offices or call centre, reaffirming its commitment to consumer safety.
