The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced that a total of 2,802,790 voters are on the register for the Anambra State governorship election slated for Saturday, November 8, 2025.

This was disclosed on Thursday in a statement by Sam Olumekun, the National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee.

Olumekun explained that the commission carried out a voter registration exercise across Anambra’s 326 wards between July 8 and 20, 2025, during which 168,187 residents applied to be added as new voters.

As stipulated in Section 19(1) of the Electoral Act 2022, INEC displayed the list of applicants for one week to allow for claims and objections. The data was then processed through the Automated Biometric Identification System, which identified and removed 27,817 cases of multiple or duplicate registrations.

After the cleanup, 140,370 applications were confirmed as valid. In addition, 5,983 voters successfully transferred their registrations into the state, bringing the total number of new additions to 146,353.

“Before this exercise, Anambra State had 2,656,437 registered voters. With the additions, the register has now increased to 2,802,790,” Olumekun stated.

On the other end, Dunukofia and Anambra West recorded the lowest numbers with 83,580 (2.98 percent) and 71,332 (2.55 percent), respectively.

“The full distribution has been published on INEC’s website and other official platforms,” Olumekun added, while assuring that Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) for new registrants, as well as those who applied for transfers or replacements, would be ready well before the election.

“The commission wishes to assure new voters in Anambra State, as well as those who applied for transfer or replacement of their lost or damaged Permanent Voter Cards, that their cards will be ready for collection well ahead of the governorship election holding on Saturday, November 8, 2025,” he said.

The Anambra governorship election is one of several off-cycle polls resulting from court-ordered changes to the electoral timetable.

INEC has also published the final list of candidates and confirmed that campaigns have officially begun. Sixteen political parties met the May 12, 2025, deadline and will present candidates for the November 8 election.
