Injured Neymar to miss Brazil World Cup opener

Neymar Jr

Brazil’s World Cup buildup has taken a serious hit, with Neymar sidelined at a crucial moment. The forward will miss upcoming friendlies and could miss the tournament opener.

The 34-year-old has been ruled out for “two to three weeks” after suffering a calf injury, and that timeline rules him out of matches against Panama and Egypt.

Brazil team doctor Rodrigo Lasmar confirmed the severity. “Neymar underwent all the medical tests… revealing a grade two calf injury,” he said.

This type of injury involves a partial muscle tear and requires careful rehabilitation. As a result, Brazil must rethink their attacking options early.

Neymar had only just rejoined the squad but missed training after swelling complaints. Earlier reports from Santos had downplayed the issue as minor.

Meanwhile, Brazil are already without key players due to club commitments. Gabriel, Gabriel Martinelli, and Marquinhos are unavailable.

The Selecao begin their Group C campaign against Morocco on June 13 with matches against Haiti and Scotland to follow shortly after.

Neymar’s absence adds pressure on a squad already adjusting under Carlo Ancelotti.

“Neymar… had continuity and was in good physical condition,” Ancelotti previously said. However, that belief now faces a tough reality check.
