Isak speaks out: Broken promises, PFA honour, and Newcastle exit standoff

Alexander Isak has commented on his stand-off with Newcastle United Football Club and his PFA recognition.

Newcastle striker Alexander Isak has marked his inclusion in the PFA Premier League Team of the 2024/25 Season with a stark and emotional Instagram statement.

The 25-year-old Swedish attacker thanked his teammates and the club yet confirmed he did not attend the PFA Awards ceremony because it “didn’t feel right” given the tensions surrounding his future.

His words revealed a deep breach of trust with Newcastle, arising from unfulfilled promises relating to his contract and a stalled transfer.

“I’ve kept quiet for a long time while others have spoken,” he wrote.

“That silence has allowed people to push their own version of events, even though they know it doesn’t reflect what was really said and agreed behind closed doors.

“The reality is that promises were made and the club has known my position for a long time. To now act as if these issues are only emerging is misleading.

“When promises are broken, the relationship can’t continue,” he wrote, insisting that change is in everyone’s best interest – not just his own.

Transfer standoff escalates as Newcastle stand firm

Isak’s departure from team activities and the public nature of his statement comes amid a heated transfer saga. Liverpool’s £110 million bid for the striker was emphatically rejected by Newcastle, who value Isak at an eye-watering £150 million.

Meanwhile, the club strongly denies that any assurances were ever given about his sale and insists no commitments were made.

The situation has caused tensions to resurface within the squad. Isak was absent from pre-season and was not in the squad for the away trip to Aston Villa on Saturday. And with the transfer window closing, the situation remains unresolved.
