Yoane Wissa has made a surprising return to Brentford’s first-team training, despite actively pushing for a move to Newcastle United.
The Congolese forward resumed sessions after holding constructive talks with head coach Keith Andrews, easing tensions that had built over the past two weeks.
However, while the conversation was positive enough to bring Wissa back into the fold, his desire to leave remains unchanged.
He is still keen on a move to Newcastle, where he hopes to play Champions League football for the first time in his career. This ambition continues to drive his stance, even as he re-engages with Brentford’s squad activities.

Brentford, meanwhile, have not ruled out a potential sale. Yet, the club has placed a much higher valuation on Wissa than the current £30 million bid – £25 million plus £5 million in add-ons – submitted by the Magpies.

Wissa’s leave conditional
Although there is room for negotiation, Brentford’s willingness to part with the 28-year-old hinges largely on identifying a suitable replacement before the transfer window shuts on September 1.
In addition to his return to training, Wissa was also present at Brentford’s Premier League media day on Tuesday, participating in promotional shoots and interviews.
This marked another step toward normalcy, although his status for the upcoming friendly against Borussia Monchengladbach remains unclear. He missed the recent 1-0 win over Queens Park Rangers (QPR) and has yet to be confirmed in the next matchday squad.
Tensions flared earlier this summer when Wissa abruptly exited Brentford’s pre-season camp in Portugal on July 21. At the time, the former Lorient attacker had vowed not to play or train for the club again. This intensified speculation around his future.
However, with talks now reopening and training resumed, the next few weeks will determine whether Brentford can hold on to their unsettled forward – or if St. James’ Park becomes his next destination.
