The Lagos State Government has hit the ground running for the 2026 fiscal year, launching its annual capacity-building initiative with a high-stakes training session focused on fiscal discipline and strategic planning.

The first phase of the year’s training calendar kicked off at the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI), specifically targeting officers within the Planning and Statistics Cadre.

Under the theme “Budgetary and Public Expenditure Management,” the program aims to sharpen the state’s financial roadmap and ensure every naira is accounted for in the pursuit of “A Greater Lagos.”

The Ministry of Establishments and Training noted that the decision to start the year with planners and statisticians was intentional.

These officers serve as the backbone of government resource allocation.Speaking on behalf of the Permanent Secretary, Olubusola Abidakun, the Director of Training, Modupe Animashaun, emphasised that these professionals are vital to the state’s success.

“Officers in this cadre were selected as the first beneficiaries due to their critical role in government planning and budgeting,” Abidakun stated.

“This program is designed to enhance competencies in budget preparation and the effective management of public expenditure, ensuring we align with global best practices.”

The intensive session, which has drawn over100 management-level officers, focuses on three primary pillars.

Enhancing the accuracy of budget preparation across all MDAs, moving beyond paperwork to ensure projects are executed efficiently and strengthening the safeguards that govern how state funds are utilized.

The state government reaffirmed that this training is not an isolated event but part of a broader commitment to continuous professional development.

By investing in the “human capital” of the civil service, the state aims to drive more transparent governance and faster service delivery for its millions of residents.
