Former Manchester United midfielder Michael Carrick has emerged as the leading candidate to take charge at the club on a caretaker basis. Sources close to the process suggest talks with the 44-year-old have gathered momentum.
United’s hierarchy are keen to make a swift decision. Ideally, an interim head coach will be in place before players return to training on Wednesday.
Although no final call has been confirmed, discussions with Carrick are understood to be advanced. The ex-player is seen as a steady, familiar presence during a turbulent period. Carrick previously stepped into the role in late 2021 following Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s dismissal. During that brief spell, United recorded two wins and one draw.
However, his stint ended once Ralf Rangnick arrived as interim manager. Carrick then chose to leave the club entirely.
Ruben Amorim’s sacking on 5 January reopened the door and Darren Fletcher initially assumed temporary control but results have failed to ease concerns.

An FA Cup defeat to Brighton on Sunday compounded the pressure. That loss followed a Premier League draw at Burnley earlier in the week.

Familiar face, familiar ground: Why United trust Carrick in uncertain times
Carrick’s connection with United runs deep. He made 464 appearances after joining from Tottenham under Sir Alex Ferguson. After retiring in 2018, he transitioned straight into coaching under Jose Mourinho. He later remained part of Solskjaer’s staff throughout a lengthy managerial spell.
Since then, Carrick’s only permanent managerial role came at Middlesbrough. He guided them to the Championship play-offs in 2023. Yet consecutive near-misses outside the top six eventually cost him his job last June. Since then, he has remained out of work.
Despite limited managerial experience, Carrick’s understanding of United’s culture appeals to decision-makers. Meanwhile, Solskjaer has also held talks regarding a possible return.
For now, however, Carrick appears closest to the role, with United hoping familiarity can bring stability during another uncertain chapter.
