The Acting Comptroller General of the Nigeria Correctional Service (NCS), Sylvester Nwakuche, has commended the Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ola Olukoyede, for his remarkable contributions to the fight against corruption.

Nwakuche made this statement yesterday during a courtesy visit to the EFCC’s corporate headquarters in Jabi, Abuja.

Leading a delegation of top management officials, he acknowledged Olukoyede’s leadership and the EFCC’s efforts in tackling financial crimes.

“You have created a wonderful track record. I am not here to blow your trumpet, but to add value to what you are doing by speaking from an external point of view. I am here to pay respect to your office and your person.

“The EFCC is a crucial institution with which we share a strong synergy, as we are responsible for the safe custody and reformation of individuals prosecuted by your agency,” Nwakuche stated.

He further expressed appreciation for the courage and dedication of EFCC operatives, including those who have lost their lives in the line of duty.

He congratulated Olukoyede on his achievements and reiterated the need for continued collaboration.

During the meeting, Nwakuche emphasised the necessity of collaboration between the NCS and the EFCC, particularly in training and intelligence sharing.

He also highlighted the persistent issue of prison congestion, revealing that as of January 10, 2025, the total inmate population across the country stood at over 80,000, with more than 53,000 individuals awaiting trial.

This, he noted, accounts for nearly 63% of the prison population.

“We are here to seek your collaboration in training and intelligence sharing. The issue of prison congestion cannot be overemphasized. Addressing this problem requires a multi-agency approach,” he added.

In response, Olukoyede welcomed the NCS delegation and reaffirmed the importance of synergy among security and law enforcement agencies.

He noted that effective collaboration is a key factor in achieving success in the justice system.

“What is important in law enforcement is understanding that collaboration and synergy are essential. In environments where due process is followed, you find that unity among agencies plays a crucial role.

“Our work at the EFCC does not end with investigations and prosecutions; it extends to ensuring that those convicted undergo proper reformation under the Correctional Service,” Olukoyede stated.

He also congratulated Nwakuche on his appointment by President Bola Tinubu, urging him to prepare for the challenges ahead.

He assured him of the EFCC’s willingness to share intelligence and work together towards achieving the objectives of the Renewed Hope Agenda.

“To whom much is given, much is expected. We hope to celebrate many milestones together. On our part, we will be willing to share intelligence and information with you. Through synergy, our institutions can contribute significantly to the President’s Renewed Hope Agenda,” he said.
