NPA deploys electronic barriers at Lagos ports

The Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) has installed electronic barrier systems across Lagos terminals to curb truck diversions and enhance port efficiency.

According to the authority, the barriers work with the Eto electronic call-up system, ensuring only trucks with valid tickets gain terminal access.

NPA Managing Director, Dr Abubakar Dantsoho, said the measure addresses chronic diversion problems that disrupted operations and caused traffic gridlock for years.

He noted that the system boosts gate control, transparency, and coordination of truck movement, reinforcing accountability in port logistics management.

The electronic barriers went live at all Lagos port terminals on September 1 after consultations with stakeholders, according to NAN reports.

Integrated with the Eto platform, the solution eliminates unauthorised access and supports the government’s Ease of Doing Business agenda nationwide.

Dr Dantsoho stressed that the deployment marks a major step toward modernising port infrastructure while aligning with global standards in trade facilitation.

The authority said it remains committed to continuous innovation, positioning Lagos ports as a competitive hub for maritime logistics in Africa.

For years, the Mile 2–Tin Can–Apapa corridor was plagued by gridlock, a challenge the new electronic barriers now directly address.
